Every year in April and May applications are opened for the “MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship”. This is the most awaited scholarship for students who want to pursue their education (undergraduate and postgraduate) in Japan. Last year, most of the scholarship recipients were from Pakistan. The following is a discussion and guide on how you can secure a spot for yourself.
- For every country, the MEXT Japan scholarships application schedule differs so you have to contact the consulate or embassy in your own country. Below we will discuss the proceedings for Pakistan only.

(Note) Applicants who choose “8. Others” may have difficulties in finding universities that can accept them depending on their majors.

(Note) An applicant who chooses Natural Sciences and would like to choose more than one major is required to select up to three majors from within the same course (i.e. Natural Sciences A, B, or C). However, an applicant who selects Natural Sciences – C as his/her first choice may choose his/her second-choice major from Natural Sciences – B or C and third-choice major from Natural Sciences – B as Natural Sciences – C offers only two majors.2. IELTS is not required for MEXT Japan Scholarship.
- (a) Applicants who are attending, or have graduated from, a higher secondary school: an academic transcript from the higher secondary school;
- Application Form (1 original)
- Academic detail Mark sheet of Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools: (Matric/O Levels, Intermediate/A Levels) (1 with original attestation)
(b) Applicants who are attending, or have already graduated from, a university: academic transcripts from both the higher secondary school and the university. Applicants must submit the following documents according to his/her academic background:Also, one of the requirements was a health certificate signed by a health professional. This is the format they want:
- Attested copy of the certificate of graduation of school/university attended (1 with original attestation)
- (a) Applicants who are attending a higher secondary school: a certificate of prospective graduation from the higher secondary school;
- (b) Applicants who have already graduated from a higher secondary school: a certificate of graduation from the higher secondary school;
- (c) Applicants who are attending a university: a certificate of graduation from the higher secondary school (in addition, they must submit a certificate of enrollment.);
- (d) Applicants who have already graduated from a university: certificates of graduation from both the higher secondary school and the university.
- Recommendation Letter from either a class teacher or principal of the last school attended (1 original)
- Attested copy of Certificate of enrollment from the current educational institution (if applicable) (1 original)
- Hope certificate issued by the Institute (for students whose final result is expected by August 2023) (1 with original attestation).
3. Benefits of the scholarship
- Allowance: 117,000 yen per month. A supplemental regional allowance of 2,000 yen or 3,000 yen per month will be added to the monthly scholarship amount for the grantees studying or conducting research in specially designated regions.
- Education Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by MEXT.
- Traveling Expenses ① Transportation to Japan: MEXT will stipulate the travel schedule and route, and provide an airline ticket to grantees who will arrive in Japan or depart after completion of degree.
4. How to apply for MEXT Undergraduate?
You do not have to send a form directly to the MEXT. You will have to apply through Japan Embassy in your own country.
